Sorry to nerd out on you, but the guns in the star wars universe aren't lasers, they're blasters. Unlike a laser which is more of a consistent beam, blaster function by exciting the extremely high energy gas stored in their ammo cartridges. The energy created from this process is focused through a prism or crystal. Finally, this energy is released in intervals to create blaster bolts. Blasters can often be much more damaging then a laser or energy beam, because instead of simply melting away at the tissue from the outside, they actually enter the skin. The bolts go into the body, and at that point their energy is released wrecking havoc on all the tissue in a certain radius, not to mention melting nearby organs and other deeper areas a laser could not reach.
